About
us--And what to expect
|
The
LoneStar Guppy Hatchery is owned and operated by award-winning master
guppy breeder Ted Dix. Ted currently maintains over 100 tanks and only
expands as he finds new strains that meet his extreme standards of excellence.
Keep checking the web site because Ted is expanding and once he is sure
the new fry breed true, the offerings will expand.
Guppy availability can be tricky sometimes because Ted actually makes his living as the proprietor of an automotive service shop. Guppies really are a hobby (although a serious one), and Ted's goal is simply stated: he's after the perfect guppy. To even come close to such an impossible goal, Ted breeds to meet specific genetic goals and refuses to think about guppies as a profession. He believes that the day he starts having to worry about production schedules is the day his greatest pleasure in life becomes just a job, and the enthusiasm that provides his edge in excellence will be lost. Such attitudes might make great guppies but they're, hard on production schedules and greatly reduce availability, so check the strain page or call Ted to check availability. If LoneStar cannot fill your order within two weeks of its receipt, Ted will personally ensure you get a prompt refund. |
Choosing
The Guppies and Shipping Them
|
We
are familiar with the old thinking about sending or ordering virgin females.
We're familiar with it; and, in agreement with most modern breeders, we
totally disagree. Simply stated: guppies do best in the water they're
born in. That said, the hardest part of getting show-quality guppies is
getting the first ones born in your water. For this reason, Ted ships
pregnant females and refuses to send virgin females in the normal course
of things. Now Ted realizes that there may be certain circumstances in
which a breeder may need virgin females for an out cross or some similar
necessity, so the refusal to send virgin females is not absolute; but
LoneStar Guppy Hatchery virgin females will never be sent with a male.
Because this is a hobby and not a livelihood, Ted's allowed to get stubborn;
and even though the customer is always right -- sometimes Ted will let
them be right with someone else's stock.
Ted ships the standard trio of one male and two females. He ships females that are already hit (pregnant) to get guppies born in your water as soon as possible. The fish you will receive will not yet have their full adult glory for the same reason breeders use very small aquariums for their breeding stock: show guppies are so heavily laden with finnage that a mature male has trouble catching the lesser burdened females. Using young males and small tanks help achieve female pregnancy. For this reason, and because younger guppies adapt better than old ones to changes in water chemistry, feeding regimens, or lighting changes. LoneStar Guppy Hatchery ships trios of prime breeding age (2 to 5 months old), and we guarantee them to drop true to type, although it should be remembered that water conditions will factor into strain appearance. We've never seen our Green Giants look blue in any water, but it's such a common phenomenon with other breeders we can't say it won't happen to you. The other most common change is that of pastels into yellows. In the case of the pastels, other breeders have reported a gradual change to yellow following a move of their hatcheries from one water source to another. The pastel change is more gradual than the green-to-blue change, and can result in show-winning pastel parents breeding true and producing show-winning yellow grand fry. If our Green Giants look blue in your water, try to show them in your water. They'll be the biggest blues around and very hard to beat on the show bench. Top |
