Defragmenting
Defrag is short for "Defragment".
Whenever files are constantly being altered and saved to your hard drive, like " whenever
you are surfing the net " your Hard Drive is subject to file
fragmentation. This can eventually slow your superfast machine to a virtual crawl. How do
you cure this problem ???................ No sweat !!!! Windows 95 has a built in accessory to defrag your drive for you......... It will even tell you if it is necessary to do....however, it can take a while, depending on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your CPU. All versions of Windows 95 work the same, as far as defrag is
concerned. Step 1 - Click the famous "Start" button Step 2 - Select "Programs" Then select "Accessories" Step 3 - Select "System Tools" then Select "Disk Defragmenter" Step 4 - Select the drive you wish to Defragment ( Usually the "C" Drive ) Click OK A "Disk Defragmenter" window will open that will inform you if the selected drive needs defragmenting at this time. Follow the instructions from there. If you are not sure...defrag the drive anyway. ....It won't hurt a thing. Note: For 1.2 Gigabyte
Hard drives, this process may take over an hour. Larger drives may take much longer. Try to schedule a defrag once per month to keep you hard drive in optimum condition....... If "Defrag" has a problem and reports that "Scandisk" must be run because of an error on your hard drive, then let it run "Scandisk". If "Scandisk" asks you if you want it to fix a problem it has found, answer YES. If "Scandisk" asks you if you want to save "Unallocated file fragments" answer NO. As soon as "Scandisk" is finished you will be able to successfully run "Defrag". |
