Version Update (Est. 30 mins) |
03/21/1999 |
Linux Red Hat 5.2 ($5.00) |
OS
- Installed with no problems. Simple update from Red Hat v5.1. I think this installation
costed about 300 megs (installed some components I'll probably never need.) I plan
on reinstalling every-so-often until I feel comfortable with the process.
Devices
- All physical drives recognized (harddrive, 3 1/2" floppy, and CD)
- Can print to lpt (Cannon BJC-4200)
- Still can't figure out how to setup PPP/dialup.
GUI
- Installed KDE (? version). Hardest part was rpm (had never rpm'd before). Took about 1 1/2 hours total.
- KDE is awesome for GUI lovers. Some features still in developement, but a nice package.
- KDE components installed:
- kdesupport-1.1-rh5x.i386.rpm
- kdelibs-1.1-1rh5x.i386.rpm
- kdebase-1.1-1rh5x.i386.rpm

- kdenetwork-ppp-1.1-1rh5x.i386.rpm

- Oh, SURE! Now make a how-to!

Attended a local Linux user group's meeting Saturday morning. I'll post
more about this group after I go to a few more meetings, but it looks
promising. I obtained RH's 5.2 binary and source for $5.00, S.u.S.E. LINUX 5.3 ($free),
KDE ($2.00), and the group's logo tshirt ($8.00). Walked out with a nice handful
of goodies for $15.00 - not too shabby! I'm buzzing from the KDE demonstration given and
S.u.S.E. looks interesting. Only wish I had a pen and some paper with
me to take notes...(Note: men outnumbered women 25:1. Too bad all the men there were major geeks. ;)
I plan on installing KDE over RH's 5.1 to play before I install 5.2
Also, I'll be adding my system information to this page soon incase anyone is curious what I'm running...

Re-installation (Est. 1 hour) |
02/1999 |
Linux Red Hat 5.1 ($5.00) |
OS
- Installed with minimal problems (longest part was trying to remember how to add / to a partition).
Devices
- All physical drives recognized (harddrive, 3 1/2" floppy, and CD)
- Can print to lpt (Cannon BJC-4200)
- Attempted to setup PPP/dialup without success.
GUI
- Configured XWindows, played with GIMP, the xgames, etc.
- Using 800x600 resolution.
Sound
- Didn't attempt to configure sound. It looks as if the sound support is just
beginning... Will obtain Red Hat 5.2 and install soon.
