What is DSL?
DSL, which stands for "Digital Subscriber Line," is another new technology for connecting to the Internet.  It gives you a connection that is incredibly fast. To compare, most modems in use now run at 28,800 bits per second.  Even the slowest DSL connection runs at 256,000 bits per second.  That's 9 times faster, which you'll definitely notice.

What's it good for?
A connection that's 9 times faster will let you use the Internet as it was meant to be.  Web pages will snap up on your screen right away, files will download with amazing speed (no need to be afraid of big downloads anymore!), and you'll be able to play network games smoothly.

How does it work?
DSL sends a special signal on your existing telephone lines.  It requires a special circuit card at the telephone company's nearest office, and it requires a special DSL modem at your home.  A technician must visit your home to install the modem. Unlike ISDN, DSL, doesn't change your phone line in any way.  You can still use the same telephones you can now. You can even use your DSL connection while talking on the phone.  The DSL signal itself is a very, very high pitched sound on your phone line.  It's far too high pitched for you to hear, so you won't even notice it while talking on the phone.  When you pick up your phone, you'll get a dial tone, and if people want to call you they'll be able to.

What's the catch?
The problem with DSL is that it's so new, it's not available in all areas.  You may or may not be able to get DSL service.  Give us a call and we'll be able to check if you can get DSL.  If not, we may be able to give you an estimate of when it will be available.  A majority of the people who have asked us for service have been able to get it - it's worth a call to see if DSL is offered in your area.

What does it cost?
DSL is available in different speeds, and therefore pricing varies.  (See price sheet.)

Is the cost of the line included in the price?
Yes.  the circuit cost of the line and the internet access are both included in the one price.

Can I hook up multiple computers to a single DSL line?
Sure.  Many of our customers have LAN's which do just fine.  The computers must be networked with 10 base-T Ethernet cards.  The DSL modem would simply plug into your hub.

There are two options to hooking up multiple computers:

1. Purchasing additional IP addresses for each computer you want to have connected to the Internet.
2. Running some type of proxy server.

What about Installation and Management?
Just like you need a phone line to use your modem, you need a DSL line to make a DSL connection.  We will order and provision your DSL circuit for you.  A trained technician will install the DSL circuit and DSL router at your facility.  Your connection will be monitored from our Network Operations Center (NOC).  There are no responsibilities by you and as your speed requirements grow, in most cases, you just call us to upgrade your bandwidth.
