LOCAL PROGRAM

HOUSING

The League of Women Voters of Midland supports equal access to housing for all citizens. Measures the League supports include:

• Increased supply of low cost housing
• Alternative types of housing
• Flexibility of zoning
• Housing assistance
• Continuous review by the City Council of proposed housing developments
• Activation of a Housing Standards Board of Code Enforcement, as provided in the City Charter

EDUCATION

The League of Women Voters of Midland supports an equitable education for all students in the MISD. Measures the League supports include:

• Adequate availability of counseling for all students
• Remedial and summer school programs at minimal or no cost to students
• Provision of adequate physical facilities
• Programs to promote academic excellence and career development
• Provision of supportive library/computer facilities for all students
• Expansion of programs which emphasize individual and follow-up counseling in career education
• Programs and activities to address the needs of at-risk students such as, but not limited to, mentor programs, parental involvement, and early identification and intervention
• Positive leadership to ensure fairness to all
• Attention to excellence of faculty
• Fair assignment of teachers to ensure faculty excellence at all schools
• Racial balance to ensure a quality integrated school

LEGAL AID

The League of Women Voters of Midland supports the provision of legal aid services for those who need it.

WATER

The League of Women Voters of Midland believes that reasonable access to quality water as defined by the EPA should be available to all residents. Availability of quality water should not be based on the ability of an individual, industry or recreational facility to pay. Federal, state, county and city governments, in addition to individuals and private industry should share the cost of protecting and testing the quality of water.
