V90 Issues & Answers

What are V90 Modems and V90 Protocols?

V90 Modems are here and are already available with new computers or at your favorite hardware supplier. If you have a 56K flex modem it is not necessary to do any kind of upgrade to V90  as this protocol is a catch all that allows designed to allow users with X2 technology  to use a network that does not support it.

The only reason you might have to go to V90 at this time, is if you use more than one service provider that has both X2 and Flex available. The Vast majority of  ISP's in the US are currently supporting Flex and are phasing out X2 as we speak. We now support V90 (partially) (Some of the component V90 protocols are supported in our routers.)

As of this writing full V90 firmware for our Cisco routers is still being beta tested. As soon as it is released we will implement it after we test it for a short time. Everyone will be notified of the upgrade as soon as it is complete.

Should I upgrade to V.90?

Until we offer full support for V.90, there's no real advantage to having a V.90 modem in your machine. If you're currently getting connections faster than 33.6, I'd suggest staying put until the new protocol is fully supported by our access routers. If you already have a K56flex modem you should definitely not upgrade to V90 at this time.

If you own a V90 modem now, you can use our system but you may not see speeds faster than 40k or 42k  and in some cases speeds as low as 33.6k - 56K Flex users should see speeds as high as 48K depending on your phone line's quality.

How do I upgrade my 56K modem to V.90?

In most cases, you will just need to download a firmware update from the manufacturer. Check the V.90 Upgrade Guide  at www.56k.com  for links. The biggest problem for many people will be finding out who the manufacturer is that made their modem, and then finding the company website.   For most name brand company's Web pages, visit the Modem Manufacturer's Link Board.   at 56k.com.

Always buy a NAME brand modem and save yourself a lot of trouble in the future. Cheap modems are no real savings once you factor in the problems they cause and the poor quality of their construction and performance
