AOL Help Center - [ Config Win 95 ] [ Config Win 3.x ] [ Config Mac ]

If you are an AOL user thinking of joining as your service provider, this page contains resources to help you get started. We have nothing against AOL, in fact we applaud the fact that they introduce so many new users to the internet. Sooner or later though, Kindergarten is over, and it's time to get into the REAL Internet and all that it has to offer.

Congratulations graduates.

Want to keep AOL but can't afford two services?

Not to worry. AOL will charge you only $9.95 per month for unlimited use of their service, if you bring-your-own-access . Us.

Miss AOL Instant messaging?

No problem! You can use your access here to stay in touch with friends and relatives still in AOL's Kindergarten for FREE. Not just by email (of course) but with an Instant Messenger program that works just like the one you used on AOL. You even get a "Buddy" list. Not only can you use this program for free with AOL customers but you can use it between non-AOL customers as well. Does AOL like this program to be used?....Yes, and they actively encourage it and they supply it for free. Don't gush with gratitude for AOL just yet, they do this because their own customers wanted it and not because they care that much about you. Nevertheless, it works just fine and for some people this feature is the only one AOL has that they really liked anyway. Use the button below to download the free software from AOL with installation instructions .......now.

Miss the Chat Rooms?

Don't worry. There are literally 10's of thousands of them on the Internet and many of them are graphically oriented using Avatars. Simply put, a chat room using graphics lets you sign on using pictures , drawings (of you if you like) or comic characters that you can use along with your text. A lot more fun than a flat chat room like AOL uses. The selection of rooms with special interests are limitless. If you really miss chat rooms that much, you can get to the very best chatrooms on the net,  by clicking HERE

Microsoft Chat - Graphical chat software & rooms using avatars.

Miss the free AOL member website?

No Contest. All of our users get a FREE 5 MB website with FTP access. On AOL's free member sites they pull your pages in a heartbeat if they see a dollar sign. We believe in Internet commerce and the only way to promote that is to allow our users to sell whatever they want. (Legal stuff of course).

Miss other AOL features?

Miss Parental Controls?

Netscape Navigator and The Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers have password parental controls built right in. Use your browsers HELP to learn how to set this feature up. It's easy. By the way, these two fine browsers work much better with real access than the stripped down version of mie that AOL bundles in their in-house software. Other parental control programs are also available at Tucows.com

Other Content

AOL is what is known as a "Content Provider". Rather than let you roam the world and be exposed to everything there is to see and do, AOL would rather, you stay in "the House" and play, where they can keep an eye on you so you won't be exposed to that big, bad Internet out there. Of course if you do go outside, big brother...er  AOL makes sure they censor everything to protect you from yourself. While this line of thinking is ok for little kids, it does not make much sense for adults. We are an "Internet Service Provider" and we let you go anywhere the Internet is capable of taking you. We think that YOU should be the best judge of what you want to see and do. So..just like in the "real" world, it's time to leave the nest......join us ..the adventure starts NOW....

Here is a list of things AOL has that you won't Miss!

Busy Signals - Limited modem speeds. - No easy choice of browser. - Slow access to the Net - Impersonal Customer service - Overpriced censored access - Advertisements when you sign on. - Unreliable Email - 17,000,000 ten year olds with dirty mouths- People trying to trick you into giving them your   passwords. - A huge amount of SPAM in you mailbox. - Forbidden sites on the net - melt down outages from over saturation, no FTP,  outrageous accounting mistakes, personal use only of your free member site,  rising prices, no ISDN solutions, No Wireless,  No on-site tech support ...whew!...There is more but by now I should think that you get the point.
